Since the ions have an electrical charge, they are attracted to anything without a charge, namely your pipe walls and plumbing fixtures. As water with the calcium and magnesium ions passes through your plumbing they attach themselves to the piping walls and form scale. Over time the scale increases, slowly closing off the pipes, restricting flows, and damaging fixtures and appliances. Occasionally the calcium and magnesium ions will randomly attain a configuration where they are converted into neutral crystals. How does the Scale Sentry Work? The Scale Sentry uses a special media resin to condition the water. The media works by utilizing the crystal form of the ions. As the water passes through the Scale Sentry system the calcium and magnesium ions run into the media and attach themselves to it. The unique configuration of the resin particles work as a template, causing the ions to convert into crystals and attracting more ions to add to the crystal.. (A similar process can be seen with a glass of saltwater, a plain glass of salt water will do nothing, however, if you place a piece of string or yarn in the glass the salt attaches to it and begins to form crystals). Once the crystals have reached the proper size, (a few microscopic nanometers) they break loose from the media and continue on, neutralized and unable to form scale. This means the calcium and magnesium are still in your water, but in such a state that they won’t cause problems. Occasionally crystals will form that are visible and may cause spots, but they aren’t the hardened scale that you would see with untreated water, it simply wipes clean. As the crystals travel through your pipes, their neutral charge attracts the charged ions in existing scale, gradually removing it until there is no remaining scale in your pipes. What size system do I need? The main factors in determining the size you need is water usage in gallons per minute (gpm). The standard system will treat flows up to 10gpm and are adequate for most homes. The high flow system will treat flows up to 15gpm and should only be used in applications where water flow regularly exceed 10gpm. A high flow system placed in an application where consistently higher flows are not used will not work properly. Should I use a salt free or salt based system? The Scale Sentry systems are excellent systems for treating hard water in most cases, however, there are some cases where you may want a standard salt based system instead. This is our extreme size system for high hardness. If you want complete spot free water. The scale sentry prevents scale build up. But you will still get some spotting that you will need to wipe off. But it will not be like the damaging hard water scale, just normal water spotting that is easily cleaned off.
