KDF-55 water treatment media was designed specifically for removing or reducing chlorine taste and odor and water-soluble heavy metals. KDF-55 filter media also controls scale, bacteria and algae, even in hot water. KDF-55 media can remove up to 99% of water-soluble lead, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. KDF-55 filter media is made of finely granulated zinc and copper alloys. When water passes through the media, the combination of these two alloys in the media produces the chemical reaction of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Redox involves the transfer of electrons between two molecules. Atoms with a positive charge are attracted to the negative charge of the zinc, while atoms with a negative charge are attracted to the positive charge of the copper. In the KDF process, electrons are taken from harmful contaminants like chlorine, which is changed into the harmless, water-soluble chemical chloride after it loses an electron.
